Traditional coordinate measurement refers to contact coordinate measuring machine, which realizes automatic measurement by touching products with probes. It has the advantages of automatic measurement, reducing human errors, programming large size products and realizing batch measurement. However, the problem is that the contact measurement can only be performed on the surface, and the geometric entities such as column, cone, ball, etc., and the probe must be selected according to the size of the feature to be measured. Before use, it can be used after calibration.

In the automatic operation of the contact CMM, the image measuring instrument must be touched bit by bit. The process of approaching, touching and bouncing is not only time-consuming, but also must have a safe space before use. The Z minor diameter of the probe is 0.3 mm or less, which is difficult to program and the probe is prone to collision. Then, thin-walled and easily deformed products are more difficult to touch.

With the development of digital precision and micro manufacturing, the trend of product integration, the rapid and high-precision measurement of micro products have become an increasingly urgent task in the industry. Contact CMM can realize automatic measurement, which can not fully meet the requirements. With the development and high integration of optical, mechanical and electronic technologies, three coordinate measuring instruments and multi-sensor three-dimensional optical measuring instruments have emerged.
